A CONTROL LIST FOR A POTATO CROP MANAGER
Prior to planting
Start preparing the soil, e.g deep ploughing, destroy all unwanted plants on the intended field and on all adjacent fields; note soil-borne pests/
pathogens such as nematodes, black dot, and black scurf. TREAT CHEMICALLY AS REQUIRED AND ACCORDING TO INSTRUCTIONS ON LABELS.
Appropriately, land preparation could be done in a period stretching from 3 to 12 months.
Establish a suitable long term crop rotation system. Ideally, potatoes should not be cultivated on the same field within four years of the previous planting.
Order certified seed potato only.
Before Planting
Clean storage facilities as well as seed potato handling equipment, and sterilize just before delivery of the seed potatoes.
Upon delivery of the seed potatoes, insects for blemishes are defects. Re-grade the tubers separating the well-sprouted seed from the yet-to-sprout seed. If land preparation has been done, go ahead with planting the plant-ready tubers. Make an effort to ‘’gibb’’(applying Gibberellic acid) the yet-to-sprout seed to hasten sprouting to catch up with the sprouted tubers already in the ground.
Address any disturbing problems with the supplier, e.g higher amounts of rots and low tuber counts than the threshold before accepting the seed potatoes.
Anticipated problems include rot within the seed pockets. Count and if possible establish the overall weight of the rots.
Stipulated seeds count per respective grade goes as follows: Large 150g - +250g, Medium 90 - 170g, small, 50-100g, Baby/chats 5-50g.
Ensure that the seed potatoes are physiologically mature and ready for planting before taking them to the field.
Potato tuber moths happen to be the most troublesome pest in potato seed storage structures, prevent larval damage by dusting the seed tubers with 5% Malathion dust. The flying adults can be controlled by applying either 80% Calaryl WP on the shed walls or by mist-blowing Karate Zeon and Ampligo within an enclosed shed.
Treat the seed potatoes with fungicides and /or sprouting stimulants if required. Avoid submersion treatments if other options are available.
It is generally not recommended to cut seed potato.
